The relevance of wear-mechanism maps to mild-oxidational wear

چکیده

The presence of oxygen in the environment in which a steel sliding system operates will promote a mild form of wear with wear debris consisting mainly of iron oxides. Of the oxidation-dominated mechanisms, mild-oxidational wear (the prefix describes the extent of oxidation and not the wear rate) has been most extensively investigated. In this paper, examples will be used to show that the wear-mechanism map for the unlubricated sliding of steels can adequately predict the occurrence of mild-oxidational wear and the trend of wear rates as well as describe the resultant features on the worn surfaces. It is also shown that this map is relevant to delamination wear and to test geometries other than the pin-on-disk configuration. It is suggested that the more-recently constructed wear maps for aluminium and magnesium alloys could similarly be used to predict the wear characteristics of these alloys during sliding.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Investigation of Wear Mechanism in Quenched and Tempered Medium Carbon-High Chromium Martensitic Steel Using Dry Sand/Rubber Wheel

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of quenching and tempering temperatures on the microstructure, mechanical properties and the wear characteristics of medium carbon-high chromium wear resistant steel. In addition, the dominant wear mechanisms were studied. For this purpose, austenitizing and tempering temperatures were selected in the ranges of 900- 1000 °C and 300- 500...

STUDY THE WEAR MECHANISM OF A PLASMA ELECTROLYTIC NITROCARBURISED (PEN/C) 316L AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

The wear mechanism of plasma electrolytic nitrocarburised (PEN/C) 316L stainless steel samples was studied after a pin on disc wear test. The surface morphology of samples after application of PEN/C process was studied using scanning electron microscope technique. The sliding tracks resulting from the wear tests on the treated specimens indicated no signs of plastic deformation and adhesive wea...

Dry and Wet Wear Characteristic of TiO2 Thin Film Prepared by Magnetic Sputtering in Ringer Solution

In this research, a thin film of TiO2 was applied on AZ91D using the method of magnetic sputtering. Microstructure investigations were done using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Wear resistance for the coating was investigated using the pin on the disk in the form of dry and in the Ringer's solution. After this test, the worn surface of the sampl...

Delamination Wear Mechanism in Gray Cast Irons

An investigation of the friction and sliding wear of gray cast iron against chromium plated cast irons was carried out on a newly constructed reciprocating friction and wear tester. The tests were the first to be done on the test rig under dry conditions and at the speed of 170 cm/min, and variable loads of 20-260 N for a duration of 15 min. to 3 hours. The gray cast iron surfaces worn by a pro...

An investigation of the corrosive wear of steel balls in grinding of sulphide ores

Ball mills are common grinding equipment in mineral processing industries. Ball wear results from three mechanisms namely impact, abrasion and corrosion. Of these, the corrosion mechanism is the least investigated, due to its chemical-electrochemical nature. Therefore, the aims of this research were to investigate the grinding chemistry influence (slurry pH, solid percentage, water chemistry an...
